The Science of Climate Change

Climate change is no longer a distant threat or just a possibility, it is now a reality for all of us. In this pathway, Kevin Trenberth, a renowned climatologist, delves into the science behind climate change. He first introduces the climate system, its main components and forces.

Tackling the Plastic Crisis

Plastic pollution is by far the biggest threat to our oceans and this remains an incredibly tough problem to solve. Plastic credits could potentially serve as one of the much needed solutions for this crisis.

The Scale of the Net Zero Challenge

The price of meeting net zero is estimated to be between $100-150 trillion over the next 30 years. Regardless of this cost, we need to reach net zero before climate change does irreversible damage to the environment and the economy.

ESG, Sustainability and Impact Jargon Buster

ESG, sustainability, impact… they all just mean green, right? Not quite. Despite being used often interchangeably, there are distinct differences between these terms.

Why You Need Data for System Change

14 mins 29 secs

Key learning objectives:

  • Outline the importance of transparency

  • Identify the steps to find solutions through problem solving

  • Understand why you need to package data correctly

Overview:

Transparency is about making the invisible visible. By revealing the true scale of a problem, it becomes harder for governments, companies, and the public to ignore. Once a problem is made visible, the next step is to understand its scale and explore solutions through models and hypotheses. Although models often rely on assumptions and imperfect data, they are valuable when they’re directionally correct and able to evolve as new evidence emerges.

Summary
Why is transparency essential when addressing system-level problems?
Transparency is about making the invisible visible. By revealing the true scale of a problem, it becomes harder for governments, companies, and the public to ignore. It transforms isolated incidents into clear evidence of systemic failure. This kind of data created accountability.

How do we move from identifying a problem to finding solutions?
Once a problem is made visible, the next step is to understand its scale and explore solutions through models and hypotheses. This starts with problem sizing - using volumetric models to quantify issues. Then financial models help estimate costs, test possible interventions, and compare the cost of action versus inaction. Afterwards, we develop hypotheses to explore what might work. Although models often rely on assumptions and imperfect data, they are valuable when they’re directionally correct and able to evolve as new evidence emerges.

Why is responsible use of data and hypotheses important?
Emotionally powerful narratives can go viral, but if they’re not grounded in truth, they risk spreading misleading ideas. For example, the claim that there would soon be “more plastic than fish in the ocean” captured global attention, but wasn’t accurate. This shows how simple but inaccurate soundbites can drive action but also distort reality. As changemakers, it’s important to balance emotional resonance with scientific integrity. Collaboration between researchers and storytellers is essential to ensure messages are true, simple, and compelling.

Why does packaging data and insights correctly matter?
Reports and models don’t change systems but people do. So insights need to be translated into clear, engaging formats that influence decision-makers. This means keeping reports as short as possible, using visuals, and breaking complex ideas into digestible pieces.
