The Scale of the Net Zero Challenge

The price of meeting net zero is estimated to be between $100-150 trillion over the next 30 years. Regardless of this cost, we need to reach net zero before climate change does irreversible damage to the environment and the economy.

ESG, Sustainability and Impact Jargon Buster

ESG, sustainability, impact… they all just mean green, right? Not quite. Despite being used often interchangeably, there are distinct differences between these terms.

Nuveen x Sustainability Unlocked

Nuveen x Sustainability Unlocked

From launch energy to lasting organisational impact

Client profile

Nuveen is a global investment management firm providing a wide range of investment solutions to institutional and individual investors. The firm specialises in asset classes such as real estate, infrastructure, and private capital, managing a diverse portfolio of public and private assets for clients worldwide.

Owned by TIAA, a major retirement provider and institutional investor, Nuveen applies ESG principles across all areas of its business to drive sustainable, long-term value creation. Our partnership with the Nuveen’s clean energy infrastructure equity team supports this mission through tailored sustainability learning initiatives.

The mission

To support Nuveen’s Net Zero ambitions, the team needed a practical way to upskill existing staff and build deeper sustainability capability.

While earlier training focused on regulatory frameworks such as SFDR and the EU Taxonomy, the team wanted to move beyond compliance. They sought tailored, specialist content from xUnlocked that reflected the realities of infrastructure investing and connected sustainability to investment decision-making.

The mission was to transform sustainability learning from a tick-box requirement into an engaging, impactful capability embedded across the team.

The challenge

Since Nuveen already had an established foundation in sustainability training, the challenge was not to introduce sustainability learning but to elevate it. The next phase needed to be more strategic, aligned to business goals, and crucially, non-mandatory.

Without the driver of compliance requirements, engagement could not rely on obligation alone. The question became: how do you bring employees onboard for learning that is value-adding rather than required?

To succeed, we needed to build on the momentum of the partnership launch, ensuring that enthusiasm for expanded topics was sustained even as day-to-day priorities competed for attention. The challenge was to clearly demonstrate the value of this next phase of learning and embed sustainability capability into the team’s rhythm of work.

It wasn’t about starting; it was about finishing.

The solution

To transform a moment of disengagement into sustained momentum, we co-led a strategy grounded in trust, relevance, and rhythm. Here’s how we brought it to life, together:

  • Delivered learning that actually mattered: Working closely with internal teams, we curated targeted, high-impact content and blended learning formats aligned directly to business priorities, ensuring every learning moment felt immediate, practical, and valuable.
  • Elevated collaboration through connection: Through in-person meetings and strengthened executive alignment, we deepened relationships across the organisation, reinforcing purpose, visibility, and shared momentum at every level.
  • Put leadership in the spotlight: CEO-endorsed communications amplified the importance of learning and signalled clear top-down support, inspiring renewed engagement and anchoring learning firmly within the company’s strategic direction.

This wasn’t just about solving for engagement; it was about embedding learning into the culture with consistency, intention, and long-term impact.

quotes

“ What matters to us is not training for the sake of training, but whether it changes how we make decisions on real assets. This partnership has helped move sustainability from a compliance requirement into something our teams can actively use – whether that’s assessing supply chain risk, understanding biodiversity impacts, or strengthening stakeholder relationships on the ground. That shift is where the real value lies. ”

Jordi Francesch, Head of Global Asset Management, Clean Energy, Nuveen Infrastructure

The impact: renewed momentum, strengthened alignment, measurable engagement

Our structured and proactive approach helped turn a post-launch slowdown into a sustained cycle of participation, strengthening engagement, deepening stakeholder alignment, and reinforcing learning as a consistent part of business life.

This resulted in:

  • Strong, consistent platform engagement across key teams, supported by a clearer rhythm of participation.
  • Multiple stakeholder connections are built through ongoing collaboration and alignment.
  • High levels of satisfaction are reported by learners and stakeholders.

The bottom line

This wasn’t simply about driving platform engagement; it was about strengthening a strategic partnership and embedding learning as a consistent performance lever.

Our structured partnership enabled Nuveen to transform early momentum into sustained engagement across key teams, anchored in three critical levels:

Protect — By closing hidden capability gaps and reinforcing shared understanding, the initiative helped safeguard the organisation’s licence to operate, reducing regulatory and reputational risk through stronger sustainability literacy.

Equip — Through expert-led, relevant learning aligned to business priorities, teams strengthened their verified capability, replacing passive awareness with informed judgment and practical confidence.

Mobilise — By embedding learning into the cadence of daily work and securing leadership alignment, capability is translated into action, turning sustainability ambition into consistent execution across the organisation.

What began as a shift into a more advanced phase of learning became an opportunity to strengthen engagement, reinforce shared ownership, and demonstrate clear value, laying the foundation for sustained momentum as the partnership evolves.
