The Science of Climate Change

Climate change is no longer a distant threat or just a possibility, it is now a reality for all of us. In this pathway, Kevin Trenberth, a renowned climatologist, delves into the science behind climate change. He first introduces the climate system, its main components and forces.

Tackling the Plastic Crisis

Plastic pollution is by far the biggest threat to our oceans and this remains an incredibly tough problem to solve. Plastic credits could potentially serve as one of the much needed solutions for this crisis.

The Scale of the Net Zero Challenge

The price of meeting net zero is estimated to be between $100-150 trillion over the next 30 years. Regardless of this cost, we need to reach net zero before climate change does irreversible damage to the environment and the economy.

ESG, Sustainability and Impact Jargon Buster

ESG, sustainability, impact… they all just mean green, right? Not quite. Despite being used often interchangeably, there are distinct differences between these terms.

Figure Out Your Carbon Hotspots

2 mins

Key learning objectives:

  • Outline steps to decarbonise using the data collected

  • Define carbon hotspots

Overview:

A hotspot is a specific category within your business that has high emissions and, crucially, is an area where you have the power to act. These are the areas where you can influence change, redesign processes, or make different purchasing decisions. To decarboise these hotspots, start by exporting your raw data and sort these categories by their size, carbon intensity and how much influence you truly have over them.

Summary
What exactly is a carbon hotspot?
A hotspot is a specific category within your business that has high emissions and, crucially, is an area where you have the power to act. These are the areas where you can influence change, redesign processes, or make different purchasing decisions. Identifying these allows you to focus your energy where it actually matters to your business operations. You should score them based on your level of control to ensure you aren't wasting time. Use this logic to guide your timing:
  • Act now if you have high control over the category
  • Plan if you have shared influence with others
  • Track if your influence is currently low

What are the practical steps to decarbonise using your collected data?
Start by exporting your raw data, whether that is spend-based or quantity-based, and group everything by category. Sort these categories not just by their size and carbon intensity, but also by how much influence you truly have over them. Select your top 5 to 10 biggest emitters. You don't need to tackle everything at once to make progress, simply pick one of these priority areas and start a conversation. By focusing your efforts this way, you ensure you aren't just moving fast, but moving in the right direction.
