The discussion around AI's footprint is deeply polarised, often framing the technology as either destroying the planet or saving it. A primary driver of this split is that the companies building these models are extremely opaque, disclosing very little about their environmental impacts as they race to construct increasingly powerful systems. This information vacuum leaves media headlines to pick up back-of-the-envelope estimates that lack necessary context or disclaimers.

How do high-value AI applications differ from energy-intensive generative models?
The truth lies between these two extremes: we need to be mindful of the resources AI consumes while actively developing models that genuinely make the world better. Crucially, many of the AI applications creating the most value for society and the planet are not the massive, energy-intensive generative models that dominate the headlines and require huge data centre build-outs. Instead, high-value tasks rely on much more efficient, domain-specific systems.

Boris Gamazaychikov is an AI Sustainability Leader and environmental engineer by training, focused on aligning AI development with climate action. He is the Co-Founder and CEO of Sustainable AI Group, a research and advisory firm helping enterprises understand and act on the environmental impacts of AI. Previously, he served as Head of AI Sustainability at Salesforce, where he built the company's AI sustainability strategy from the ground up and co-created the AI Energy Score - the first standardised benchmark for measuring AI model energy use.
