The Science of Climate Change

Climate change is no longer a distant threat or just a possibility, it is now a reality for all of us. In this pathway, Kevin Trenberth, a renowned climatologist, delves into the science behind climate change. He first introduces the climate system, its main components and forces.

Tackling the Plastic Crisis

Plastic pollution is by far the biggest threat to our oceans and this remains an incredibly tough problem to solve. Plastic credits could potentially serve as one of the much needed solutions for this crisis.

The Scale of the Net Zero Challenge

The price of meeting net zero is estimated to be between $100-150 trillion over the next 30 years. Regardless of this cost, we need to reach net zero before climate change does irreversible damage to the environment and the economy.

ESG, Sustainability and Impact Jargon Buster

ESG, sustainability, impact… they all just mean green, right? Not quite. Despite being used often interchangeably, there are distinct differences between these terms.

Climate Change Adaptation

5 mins 17 secs

Key learning objectives:

  • Define climate change adaptation

  • Outline government, corporate and individual adaptation strategies

  • Understand why mitigation is preferable to adaptation

Overview:

Adaptation means adapting our lives in anticipation of climate change impacts. Governments can conduct risk assessments and identify areas of vulnerability. Governments can outline specific strategies to address the impacts of climate change. Businesses can conduct climate risk assessments to identify and assess exposure to climate risk. It is harder for individuals to adapt but they can push for policy change and create personal and emergency resilience plans.

Summary
How can governments adapt to climate change?
Governments can conduct risk assessments and identify areas of vulnerability. Governments can outline specific strategies to address the impacts of climate change (e.g. measures to protect infrastructure). They can also collaborate with other governments and organisations to share resources and develop coordinated responses.

How can businesses adapt to climate change?
Businesses can adapt to climate change by taking proactive measures and building resilience to the impacts of climate change. For example, conducting climate risk assessments to identify and assess exposure to climate risk. They can collaborate with stakeholders to identify shared risks and opportunities to develop solutions that benefit everyone.

How can individuals adapt to climate change?
It is more challenging for individuals to adapt to climate change, but they can do so by building personal resilience plans and emergency plans should an extreme weather event happen. Individuals can also advocate for policy change and action on climate change by contacting elected officials and supporting climate-friendly policies and initiatives.

Why is mitigation preferable to adaptation?
While adapting to climate change can help us be more resilient to the impacts of extreme weather events, it cannot prevent or reverse the underlying problem of climate change. It may also be insufficient in addressing some of the most severe impacts. Mitigation can help prevent the worst impacts of climate change and provide long-term solutions to the problem. Overall, studies have shown that the costs of mitigating climate change are likely to be significantly lower, trillions of dollars lower, than the costs of adapting to its impacts.
